India’s first rapid rail project, the Delhi to Meerut Metro, is currently under construction. It aims to establish efficient connectivity between Delhi and Meerut and reduce travel time between the two cities.

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), the implementing agency for the Delhi-Meerut Metro, has renamed the Delhi to Meerut Metro as RAPIDX, representing youth and optimism. Delhi To Meerut Metro Overview

Delhi to Meerut Metro project, also known as the Delhi Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System, is a part of the Make in India initiative. The Delhi Meerut project is responsible for the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), a joint venture between the Government of India, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.

Delhi to Meerut Metro is one of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors under Phase 1 of the NCRTC. The other two corridors under Phase 1 are the Delhi - Panipat Corridor and the Delhi - Gurugram - SNB - Alwar Corridor. The aim of the Delhi Meerut transit system is to provide an efficient transport system between Delhi and Meerut.

The Delhi Meerut Metro project involves constructing an 82.5 km long rail-based rapid transit system connecting Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi and Modipuram in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.


Delhi To Meerut Metro: Construction And Operational Status

Delhi to Meerut metro train will reduce the travel time between Delhi to Meerut. Once the project becomes operational, commuters can cover the distance between Delhi and Meerut in less than 60 minutes

Though the entire Delhi-Meerut metro line is expected to become operational by June 2025, the implementing agency, the NCRTC, aims to put the priority section of the Delhi to Meerut metro line into service within a month. The priority section is 17 km long, and it is between the Sahibabad and Duhai Depots with five stations, namely Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot.


Key Features of Delhi Meerut Metro

  • Delhi Meerut Metro is India's first RRTS corridor. 

  • The stretch of the Delhi Meerut metro route in Delhi is about 14 km, whereas the stretch in UP is 68 km. 

  • The average speed of the Delhi to Meerut metro train is 100 km/hr, while the top/design speed is 180 km/hr.

  • Savli in Gujarat is the manufacturing location, whereas Hyderabad is the design location. 

  • Delhi Meerut metro is expected to witness 8 lakh daily travellers. 

  • There will be one woman coach and one business coach on each Delhi to Meerut metro train.

Design Features of Delhi To Meerut Metro Train

The Delhi to Meerut metro train has been designed to provide a seamless travel experience for commuters.

  • The train is equipped with cushioned and reclining seats.

  • There will be an overhead luggage rack on the train. 

  • The train is designed to make it accessible for everyone. There is dedicated space for wheelchairs and stretchers for easy access.

  • To provide a smooth travelling experience to the commuters, the Automatic Train Operation system is to be deployed to run Delhi Meerut metro train.

  • Metro trains will have magazine holders, onboard Wi-Fi, mobile/laptop charging points, and sun blinds.

Delhi Meerut Metro Funding

Organisations like ADB, NDB, AIIB, the Government of India, the Delhi Government, and the Uttar Pradesh Government financed the first rapid rail project.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) invested around USD 1 billion, and the New Development Bank (NDB) invested USD 500 million from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). 

There is a 20% contribution by the Government of India, 3.22% by the Government of Delhi, and 16.78% by the Government of UP.

There will be 22 stations and 2 maintenance depots on the Delhi to Meerut metro route. Sarai Kale Khan is one of the biggest stations on the route line. Find below the list of the rapid train Delhi to Meerut stations:

Delhi Meerut Metro Route Highlights

Among the 22 rapid train stations from Delhi to Meerut, 4 stations are underground: Anand Vihar, Meerut Central, Bhaisali, and Begumpul. 11.5km length of the Delhi Meerut metro line is a part of underground construction. The rest of the stations are elevated.

The rapid train Delhi to Meerut stations of Partapur, Rithani, Brahmapuri, Meerut Central, Bhaisali, MES Colony, Daurli, and Meerut North stations will come under the ambit of the MRTS metro services. 

The commuters can access the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway station and Sarai Kale Khan ISBT from Sarai Kale Khan station, which is connected to the Delhi Metro's pink line. The pink line is also connected to the Anand Vihar metro station.

The rapid train Delhi to Meerut stations of New Ashok Nagar, Anand Vihar, and Sahibabad stations are connected with the Delhi Metro blue line.

Delhi To Meerut Metro Fares 

The fare for the Delhi to Meerut Metro is currently unavailable. It will be announced once the Delhi Meerut metro train becomes operational. It is expected that the NCRTC will install the EMV-based open loop Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system to collect fares.


Conclusion On Delhi To Meerut Metro

The foundation stone of the Delhi Meerut metro project was laid down by the Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, on March 8, 2019. It is expected that the entire metro line will become operational by 2025. From reducing the travelling time between Delhi and Meerut to easing congestion, improving connectivity, and improving the quality of people's lives, the 82.5km stretch of Delhi to Meerut metro will transform how people commute.
