The Tamil Nadu government has entrusted the management of this extensive project to the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO)—the selection of Parandur as the project site was based on its strategic location and suitability. An essential component of the Chennai Greenfield International Airport will be its specialized cargo terminal. It is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting trade and commerce between Chennai and its neighbouring regions.
This cargo facility is anticipated to make a significant contribution to the state's economic development.
Located approximately 40 kilometres from Chennai's city centre, the airport is poised to provide a practical and viable solution to the city's aviation requirements. It will have the capacity to cater to an estimated 60 million passengers annually.

Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (TIDCO) has initiated the search for land to establish a new airport, driven by the rising demands for both passenger and freight transportation. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has selected Parandur as the location for this new airport, primarily due to its strategic position, being situated approximately 60 kilometres away from the city centre and 70 kilometres from the existing Chennai International Airport.
This upcoming Chennai's second airport project is anticipated to require a substantial investment exceeding INR 20,000 Cr. and is planned to feature two runways, a dedicated freight terminal, taxiways, terminal structures, and a wide range of supplementary facilities and services.
The upcoming Parandur Airport in Chennai will have the capacity to accommodate larger aircraft with seating capacity for more than 600 passengers. Furthermore, it is expected that upon its full completion, the airport will be able to serve a staggering 100 crore passengers annually.

The anticipated inauguration of the Parandur Greenfield airport is scheduled for the year 2028. Currently, specialists are meticulously scrutinizing the project's specifications, which include, but are not limited to, a comprehensive examination of the airport's infrastructure, commonly referred to as the 'Detailed Project Report' (DPR).
The state government is mandated to adhere to the prerequisites outlined in the 2008 Gross Floor Area (GFA) Policy. Securing permission for the utilization of the designated land for the airport is mandatory for obtaining site authorization from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA).

A dedicated pathway will connect the Parandur airport to the upcoming Bangalore-Chennai Expressway. Furthermore, there are plans to establish a metro line that will directly connect the Chennai Metro to the airport, simplifying the commute for passengers travelling to and from the city. The Tirumalpur Railway Station, conveniently located just 10 kilometres from Parandur Airport, provides accessible public transportation options for travellers.
Parandur's proximity to the Thirumalpur Railway Station is approximately 10 kilometres away. Moreover, Parandur is poised to experience a significant economic upswing.
In addition, the construction of the airport has the potential to greatly stimulate both the real estate and aviation sectors in Chennai. In addition, the surrounding districts of Chennai are expected to witness growth, and property values are anticipated to increase by approximately 15% due to improved connectivity and infrastructure.
Furthermore, the significance of having Chennai's second airport cannot be overstated. The Parandur new airport location is relatively easier to acquire since it borders agricultural land, and the government is in discussions with residents regarding compensation for homes that may need to be acquired for airport development.
Koothapakkam, situated just 9.8 kilometres from the greenfield Chennai airport site, is one of the nearby areas. This area primarily features apartments and residential plots ranging in price from INR 20 lakh to INR 60 lakh.
