Public transportation plays a significant role in the efficient functioning of any city in India. In recent years, the city of Kochi, in the southern state of Kerala, has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its public transport system with the introduction of the Kochi Metro. The city has the fastest-developed metro routes and is famous for being the first to have a water metro. 


Kochi Metro: Overview

In 2012, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited established the Kochi Metro, for which Dr. Manmohan Singh laid the foundation. In 2017, PM Narendra Modi Ji opened the line from Aluva to Palarivattom for passengers, and in September 2022, he laid the foundation for Phase II. 

As of now, only the first phase of the Kochi metro is operational, and two more are planned. Kochi Metro Rail is the first transit system in the world whose administrative functions are led by women. 


Kochi Metro: Route

The Blue Line of Kochi Metro Rail, which starts from Aluva and ends at Petta, and the Pink Line, which starts from JLN Stadium and ends at Infopark II are fully operational at present. You can look at the metro map below to understand the routes and stations.


Kochi Metro: Blue Line (Aluva- Petta)

The Blue Line is the first phase of Kochi Metro that consists of a single line, inaugurated on June 17, 2017. Kochi Metro's blue line is 23.8 km long and has 22 operational stations. 

 

  • Phase IA of Blue Line (Under Construction)

Phase IA of the blue line metro connects Petta with SN Junction. Two stations, namely  Vadakkekotta and SN Junction, and the cutting-edge Panamkutty Bridge, are being built as part of Phase 1A.


  • Phase IB of Blue Line (Under Construction)

The Phase IB extension of the Kochi Metro’s blue line will be 1.16 km long and will start from SN Junction and go up to Tripunithura Terminal. It will cost around Rs 162 crore to build this metro route.

Kochi Metro: Pink Line (JLN Stadium - Infopark II)

The Phase II project of Kochi Metro comprises an 11.2-km Pink Line. It will have 11 stations, approved by the Kerala government in July 2018. This phase includes building a spur line that connects Kakkanad's Infopark II and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Kochi Metro Fare

The metro provides a simple, affordable way to explore this magnificent city's best views. You can pay the Kochi metro fare to get a single entry ticket, or if you are traveling in a group, you can pay Kochi metro charges for the group tickets. 

The minimum Kochi metro fare for the Blue Line is Rs 10, and the maximum is Rs 60.

Kochi Metro: Mobile App

Kochi1 is a Kochi Metro mobile app introduced by Axis Bank Ltd. The bank's aim behind the launch of this application was to facilitate users to operate Kochi1 Metro Cards from their comfort. The Kochi1 Metro card has the below-mentioned list of services:

  • You can buy a QR Ticket to travel in Kochi metro. You can pay them through Net Banking, Credit or Debit Cards, and UPI. 

  • You can check the status of your ticket before or while boarding the metro via a mobile application. 

  • You can add and check balances available on the Kochi 1 metro card. 

Kochi Metro Time

From Monday to Saturday, the Kochi metro opening time is 6 a.m. and closing time is 10:30 p.m. Whereas on Sunday, the Kochi metro starting time is at 8 a.m. and closing time at 10:30 p.m.
