As the population continues to grow and the demand for transportation increases, there is a pressing need to revamp the public transport system to ensure speed, reliability, and efficiency. Recognizing this necessity 8 years back, the city planners of Chennai Metropolitan City launched Chennai Metro Rail in 2015. This initiative aimed to establish a public transport system that is today a comfortable, affordable, time-saving, and convenient mode of transportation for the residents of Chennai.
Chennai Metro is a rail-based rapid transport system that serves the people of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Chennai Metro Rail is India's 4th longest metro network. Today, the projectis a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu.
To streamline the connectivity infrastructure, the Chennai metro route network is a mix of underground and elevated metro stations. Phase 1 of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) project consists of the blue and green lines. At present, these two lines are fully operational. Three metro lines are under construction under phase 2 of the Chennai Metro rail project, namely the Purple Line, Orange Line and Red Line.
At present, Chennai metro blue line and green line are operational. The length of the two lines is 54.6km, and every day 2 lakh people use the Chennai metro to commute efficiently and comfortably. There are 52 trains on these lines, and each train has four coaches.

Blue Line metro train route in Chennai comes under phase 1 of the Chennai metro project. It runs from Chennai Airport to Wimco Nagar. The Blue Line has a total distance of around 32.6 km. There are 26 stations on the blue line of the Chennai metro route, of which 13 stations are underground and the remaining are elevated.

The green line is another corridor under phase-1 of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) project. Green Line metro train Chennai route is 22 km, and it stretches from Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount with 17 stations. 8 metro stations in Chennai under the Green Line are elevated, and the rest 9 are underground.

Under phase 2 of the Chennai Metro project, three new metro corridors will be constructed with a total distance of 118.9 km. The new three Chennai metro lines are the purple line, orange line, and red line. At present, phase 2 is under construction status.
Under phase 2, purple line (line-3) Chennai metro rail is one of the corridors under construction. It will connect Madhavaram to Siruseri SIPCOT, and the distance of this Chennai metro line will be 45.813 km. There will be a total of 48 stations, out of which 19 metro stations Chennai will be elevated & rest 29 will be underground.

The orange line (line 4) is another corridor under phase 2 of the Chennai metro rail project. It will stretch from the Lighthouse area to the Poonamallee Bypass. 28 stations are planned for this route, with a total length of 26.09 km. 18 stations of the orange line metro train Chennai will be elevated, and the rest 10 will be underground.

Under construction Red line (line 5) is the third Chennai metro line under phase 2. This line will connect Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. As per the Chennai Metro Rail Limited, the minimum fare is Rs. 10, and the maximum is Rs. 50.
Chennai Metro Rail aims for the fast and reliable movement of people from one place to another. At present, Chennai Metro Rail operates from 04:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
During peak hours, the frequency of the Chennai metro rail is 4-5 minutes, whereas it is 15 minutes during peak hours.
To promote a seamless travel experience, Chennai Metro Rail Limited has introduced a mobile app that can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
The Chennai Metro Rail app aims to enhance the traveling experience of commuters by providing insights about the nearest metro station, fares, travel time, modes of transportation to reach the metro station, facilities available at each metro station, tourist sightseeing spots around a chosen metro station, etc.
To make traveling easy, convenient, and comfortable for the people of Chennai, Chennai Metro, in collaboration with State Bank of India, has launched a National Common Mobility Card or Singara Chennai Card that can be used across the different public transport systems in Chennai.
To ease congestion during peak hours and to alleviate overcrowding, Chennai Metro Rail Limited is set to introduce 28 six-coach trains on the Phase-1 Chennai Metro Route network.
