New Parliament Building of India: A Sneak-Peek

The new Sansad Bhavan of India (parliament building) is a part of the Central Vista project that aims to replace and reinvent the initial colonial-era buildings. The entire project involved in the construction of the new parliament building is worth USD 2.4 billion. 

The parliament building has been thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs of Parliament members, offering them spacious and contemporary surroundings for legislative discussions. In addition to its modern facilities, the building embraces environmentally friendly principles and incorporates sustainable elements such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems. 

These features reflect a commitment to sustainability while ensuring a conducive environment for parliamentary activities.

The ceremonial road outside the new parliament of India runs for three kilometers and links the Rashtrapati Bhavan with India Gate.

The new parliament building of India is designed by a team of renowned architects who have successfully incorporated modern aesthetics with traditional Indian design elements. 

The overall design of the new parliament draws inspiration from the Chausath Yogini Temple at Hirapur, Odisha, known for its circular plan and historical significance. 

Below is the complete look and feel of the New Sansad Bhawan. 

1. The Triangular Shape

The New Parliament building is triangular in shape. As per the architect, Bimal Patel, this triangular shape of the New Parliament House is a nod to the sacred geometry of different religions. 

2. Built-Up Area

New Sansad Bhawan is a three-storey building that has a built-up area of about 64500 sq m. Earlier, the parliament had 543 seats, but the New Sansad Bhavan offers 888 seats and might expand the seating up to 1272 in the future. 

In the absence of Central Hall, the Lok Sabha will be used to have joint sittings of both houses.

3. The Entrances

The new parliament building has three ceremonial entrances for the President, Vice President, Lok Sabha Speaker, and PM. The entrance for the general public is expected to be from Parliament Street, near the Press Trust of India Building. 

4. Environment Friendly

Embracing the principles of sustainable development, the New Parliament building has installed plenty of green initiatives. Incorporating this has led to the use of renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines to reduce the reliability of conventional power sources. 

Apart from this, the New Sansad Bhavan has taken water conservation measures through rainwater harvesting and efficient wastewater management systems. Furthermore, the green spaces and gardens in the New Parliament building have enhanced the overall look. 

5. Lok Sabha & Rajya Sabha

The peacock-themed Lok Sabha has been inspired by the national bird of India. Teal carpeting goes well with the carvings of peacock feathers on the walls and ceiling. On the other hand, the Rajya Sabha is lotus-themed decorated with red carpets. 

The Historic Sengol At The New Parliament Building

During the pre-independence era, Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, received a remarkable gift known as "Sengol." This unique scepter was bestowed upon him by the Adheenams of Tamil Nadu, symbolizing the historic power transfer from the British to the Indians. 

Crafted from gold-plated iron, the Sengol has been installed in the new parliament building. It measures 1.5 feet in length and features intricate embellishments, including symbolic representations of the sun, moon, and stars.
