Griha Pravesh, also known as House Warming is an auspicious day for many. This day is a chance for you to show your new house to your friends and family and share these new beginnings with your loved ones. The goal of this ceremony is to let in positive energy in the house and leave behind everything negative. This is the perfect opportunity for you to officially commemorate the day. This day has got to mean a lot to you as new homeowners, and so everything is expected to be top-notch and perfect. Note that this ceremony can only take place once. 

What is The Griha Pravesh Pooja?

Before you can understand the significance of this ceremony, it is important to understand what the term means. While “Griha” means “house”, “Pravesh” means “to enter”. Now, there are a lot of people confused about the right time to conduct this ceremony. There is no fixed moment at which you are required to perform this ritual. According to your convenience, it can either be right before you are to shift to your new house or a few weeks after. 

Before you enter your new home, there is usually a Kalash Pooja performed to mark the beginning of the Griha Pravesh. Here, a pot (preferably copper) is filled with water. A coin and nine types of grains are placed on top of the pot. Finally, there is a full raw coconut placed on the pot and the homeowner enters it by gently kicking the pot with his/her right foot.  This ceremony is accompanied by the singing of a variety of Hindu mantras and sayings.

Should Griha Pravesh Pooja be performed at a specific time/day?

According to the Hindu Calendar, there are fixed timings and dates at which it is considered auspicious and prosperous to perform the ceremony. Certain rituals are expected to be performed for the ceremony to be declared a success. 

A common problem faced by many people who want to perform a Griha Pravesh Pooja at their home is finding the right dates and timings for the same. Now that everything is available on the net, sometimes it becomes difficult to differentiate between what is authentic and what is not. Now that you have all the right dates and timings in place, there are some things that need to be considered before you plan your Griha Pravesh. While there are daily routine things that can easily be kept in mind, sometimes even the smallest of things slip our minds and it happens to the best of us. 

DO's

• Make sure you properly clean the house before the pooja. You can either use salt water or a mixture of vinegar, lime juice, and salt. 

• No guest should leave the house empty-handed. You can give each one of them small gifts like a coin, a box of sweets, or any item that can be kept as a showpiece at home. 

• Priests should be the first to eat the holy food, and never forget to offer them a variety of food items that are nothing short of a feast. 

• You can use rice grains or vibrant colours to decorate your floors with Rangoli. According to the Hindu norms, floors decorated with Rangoli open the house to the arrival of Lakshmi. 

• Once the Girha Pravesh Pooja is over, make sure you tell the priest to perform a Havan. A havan is a ritual where herbs and wood are put on fire along with the chanting of mantras. 

• Dress appropriately for the occasion and try to wear traditional clothes. Avoid any clothing or accessory that is black. 

DONT's

• In case a woman in the house is pregnant or if there has been a recent death in the family, it is not auspicious to perform the pooja. 

• Do not leave the house empty for at least 3 days after the Griha Pravesh Pooja has taken place. 

• No furniture except a gas cylinder/stove should be placed anywhere in the house till after the pooja is completed.

• Do not place the idols in any direction except the East direction of the house.

• The pooja should not be started before sprinkling the whole house with mango leaves for the purpose of purification. 

• Never let the priest leave the house without giving him ample sweets and gifts as an offering.

Make sure that all the construction of the house has been completed beforehand. Ensure that you move in on the day of the Pooja and there is no confusion.
