Ayodhya, a city nestled on the banks of the sacred Sarayu River, holds immense historical and religious significance for millions worldwide. Now, Ayodhya City is witnessing an infrastructure development in the form of "Ayodhya Airport" that will bring significant economic growth in the region.

As per the latest reports, the Civil Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, tweeted about the Ayodhya airport and informed that the work is in full swing and is expected to be completed by September 2023.

Ayodhya Airport: Overview 

Ayodhya Airport, formally known as Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram International Airport, is under construction in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh. The airport is being developed near NH 27 under the Centre's Regional Connectivity Scheme at an approximate cost of INR 242 Crore. The Ayodhya international airport aims to promote tourism while increasing connectivity and boosting economic growth.

As of now, Ayodhya's nearest airport is the Lucknow International Airport, but once the airport becomes operational, it will provide seamless travel for devotees as it will be only 8 km away from Ayodhya.


Ayodhya Airport: Construction 

The airport is spread across 821 acres, and the Airport Authority of India will execute the development of the airport in three phases. Below you will find the key features of the Faizabad airport:

  • The first phase includes the construction of a 6,000 m² terminal building. 

  • The runway will be widened and extended to a length of 2,200 metres, a width of 45 metres, and 7.5-metre shoulders on either side.

  • The construction of a 140-m by 110-m apron to accommodate ATR 72 I Q400-type aircraft

  • The construction of a 310 by 23 m link taxi track in order to connect the runway and apron

  • The construction of a 93 by 96-m isolation bay.

  • The development of phase one will also allow the airport to handle A321 model aircraft. It also includes the construction of an aerodrome control tower, taxiway strips, a fire watch tower, a fire station, and an anti-hijack control room. 

This new airport near Ayodhya will provide a convenient gateway for visitors coming from other parts of UP like Lucknow, Varanasi, Allahabad, etc.

Ayodhya Airport: Terminal Details 

The terminal's design will be an amalgamation of modern architecture with elements of traditional architecture. 

  • The shikaras will be suspended at various heights on the terminal roof to reflect the spirit of Ram Mandir.

  • Passengers would feel as though they are in the Ayodhya Palace, thanks to the glass facade of the terminal.

  • Moreover, the terminal of the Ayodhya international airport will have ornate columns with pictures showing moments from the Ramayana. 

  • Furthermore, the terminal building will incorporate green features like skylights, solar-powered electricity, and rainwater harvesting. 

Ayodhya Airport: Developer 

The contract for building the runway was awarded to Bangalore-based Vishal Infrastructure.

Ayodhya Airport: Capacity

The new terminal is spread over 6000 sq m. It is designed in such a way that it accommodates 300 passengers during peak hours, with an annual handling capacity of 6,00,000 passengers. 

 

Ayodhya Airport: Current Status

Here is a quick update for people wondering about the Ayodhya airport status: as of May 2, 2023, 75% of the construction work on the terminal is complete. In contrast, the runway's construction is about 90% finished. The government of Uttar Pradesh intends to begin flight operations in October 2023.
